Planting own-root roses – guide – PharmaRosa®

Planting: how to get a sure start

Planting decides whether the rose establishes quickly or spends months “struggling to settle”. Here we go step by step through site selection, soil preparation, planting depth and watering-in, then the watering schedule for the first weeks. Private gardens, containers and public spaces each have their own route, so there are fewer chances for mistakes. Are you planting now, replanting, or trying to correct a weak start?

Quick basics

  • Site: sunny, well ventilated position (min. 5–6 hours of sun).
  • Soil: loose, free draining; pH 6.0–6.8; rich in organic matter.
  • Depth: for own-root roses the top of the rootball should be level with the soil surface (in cold, exposed sites max. 2–3 cm below).
  • Watering-in: during backfilling, water in twice so soil settles around the roots.
  • Mulch: 5–8 cm bark/compost; leave a 2–3 cm ring clear around the stems.
  • First weeks: deep watering; avoid light sprinkling and keep water off the foliage.

Own-root – basal shoots strengthen the variety; long lifespan, good ability to rejuvenate.

Site & soil

  • Light & wind: at least half a day of sun; avoid cold, stagnant hollows.
  • Soil: crumbly, well drained; on heavy soils add compost + washed sand, on sandy soils compost + biochar/zeolite.
  • pH: ideal range is 6.0–6.8.

In detail: Soil & pH.

Step by step

  1. Watering in the pot: before planting, soak the rootball thoroughly.
  2. Planting hole: width twice the rootball; loosen the sides and the bottom.
  3. Mix: work compost (and loosening material if needed) into the excavated soil.
  4. Test fit & depth: the top of the rootball should be level with the soil surface.
  5. Watering-in (I): backfill halfway, water thoroughly; let it drain.
  6. Watering-in (II): finish backfilling, water once again.
  7. Watering basin & mulch: form a rim; apply 5–8 cm mulch, keeping a 2–3 cm ring clear around the stems.

Planting depth

For own-root roses the top of the rootball should be level with the soil surface. In exposed, frosty positions planting 2–3 cm deeper is acceptable. Do not plant too deep (risk of standing water and lack of air around the roots).

First weeks

  • Watering: in the first 2–4 weeks, deep watering 2–3 times per week (8–10 L/plant); after that you can switch to the normal schedule.
  • Shade: during heatwaves you can give temporary shade in the afternoon to prevent scorch.
  • Nutrition: go easy until the first flush of flowers, then feed regularly to a schedule.

Private garden – specifics

  • Spacing: according to final size (usually 45–60 cm for bush types).
  • Soil: in beds, deep loosening + compost; avoid frost pockets.

In detail: Placement – Private garden.

Pot / terrace – specifics

  • Container: large drainage holes + 3–5 cm drainage layer; min. 10–15 L (depending on type).
  • Growing medium: airy mix (soil + compost + perlite/pumice).

In detail: Placement – Pot / terrace.

Public and green areas – specifics

  • Site preparation: in compacted urban soil loosen to 35–40 cm depth, with partial soil replacement.
  • Protective edge: 5–8 cm edging to guard against strimmers and foot traffic.

In detail: Placement – Public and green areas.

Timing (guideline)

  • Container-grown (2 L): can be planted almost any time in frost-free weather.
  • Bare-root: in autumn (from leaf fall until frost) and early spring (after the ground thaws).

Regional zones – short guide

  • Dublin and Eastern Leinster (Dublin & Eastern Leinster): spring ~ 20 Mar – 10 Jun; autumn ~ 10 Sep – 5 Nov
  • Leinster (Leinster): spring ~ 20 Mar – 10 Jun; autumn ~ 10 Sep – 5 Nov
  • Munster (Munster): spring ~ 20 Mar – 10 Jun; autumn ~ 10 Sep – 5 Nov
  • Connacht (Connacht): spring ~ 20 Mar – 10 Jun; autumn ~ 10 Sep – 5 Nov
  • Ulster (Ulster): spring ~ 20 Mar – 10 Jun; autumn ~ 10 Sep – 5 Nov

Weather-dependent: in prolonged rain, frost or heatwaves, adjust your timing.

Common mistakes

  • Planting too deep → roots suffocate, growth is checked.
  • “Sip-feeding” with a little water → surface rooting, more drought-sensitive.
  • Mulch pushed up against the stems → risk of rot.
  • Skipping loosening on heavy soil → standing water, higher disease risk.

Troubleshooting: Watering – fault finding.

Tools you’ll need

  • Spade
  • Secateurs
  • Compost
  • Rose soil/rose compost
  • Mulch (bark/compost)
  • Watering can / Hose
  • Drip irrigation (optional)
  • pH test
  • Zeolite / Biochar (optional)

FAQ

When is it worth planting container-grown roses?
Any time from spring to autumn in frost-free weather; in hot spells, avoid full midday sun during the first week.
How firmly should I firm the soil back?
Gently, by hand – just enough to remove air pockets, the soil should not be rock hard.
Do I need a stake around the plant?
In windy spots, temporary staking is effective, but remove it once the roots are established.
